What's That Lolita Brand?

0

The other day, I was thinking; "No one ever really bothers to explain certain brands any further since they're so widely known amongst lolitas, but what about newbies?" so here's me explaining various brands!

This post would've been very helpful to me when I was new to the fashion, actually, as well... I thought Metamorphose was primarily gothic lolita for some reason?? I think I mixed them up with Moi Meme Moitie once and just never thought about it. Anywho! If you're this posts target audience, you're probably confused, so let's get onto the explaining! This'll have names, photos, minor history, shorthands, designers, sites, and what items/styles they're primarily known for! ♪

Please note this is only meant to give brief histories and history sections are not super fact-checked! Please check my sources for more detailed histories. Please inform me of any mistakes and do not use this as a formal source, trust me. I hope to remedy this in the future. The social media sections are also not super thorough. If you have anything to add, please tell me~

"(unclear)" is intended to be an entire section being unclear, while "(?)' is just intended to be the one part.

Angelic Pretty

Angelic Pretty, a Japanese brand, is the pinnacle of sweet lolita to some and a quintessential lolita brand. They're known for their fabric prints & tea party shoes. They're also responsible for most iconic sweet prints you will hear about, such as Milky★Planet and Dream Marine. Their bright pink polka-dot bow logo is iconic.

In 1979, Hiroko Honda founded "Pretty" as a select shop² in Laforet Harajuku¹. They stocked other fashion brands, including many on this list. It seems Angelic Pretty as a brand started in 2001, with them fully phasing out all other brands (with joint ventures and international stores run by other companies as an exception) sometime after 2006 after having made efforts to do so since the brand started. Pretty did release some items as a brand while they were a select shop. In 2010 their San Francisco store with Harajuku Hearts opened. They now have two locations in China and one in Paris, France as well.

About Mascots: They have a few mascots, Milky-Chan the FawnMilky BearShy Bear, and Lyrical Bunny are the ones you will likely see the most. The last three appear on prints or as bags fairly regularly, but Milky-Chan hasn't had a dedicated product since 2009 (at least not one with Milky-Chan in the name). Also, I am not too well-versed in their mascots and couldn't find a real list, only some history which mainly focused on Lyrical Bunny or Shy Bear, my apologies.

BABY, The Stars Shine Bright

Known mainly for Usakumya and Kuma kumya, their brand mascots, BABY is an iconic Japanese brand featuring many different styles–though their sub-brand ALICE and The PIRATES is where any more gothic ideas tend to go–with over 20 stores in Japan, one store in France, and one store in California, USA.

About Mascots: Usakumya is a bear who wanted long ears like a rabbit. A girl saw him crying and pulling at his ears trying to make them longer, and gave him a bunny ear bonnet. "Bunnybear" is used to refer to Usakumya, and occasionally the other "Kumya"'s. Kuma Kumya came later, and is a bear dressed as a bear. There are also a few one-off animals, Neko Kumya (dressed as a cat) appearing the most often. The previously mentioned girl states that where she is from, all bears are called "Kumya" in Usakumya's backstory. These bears are often seen as "pochettes" but are incorporated in many other products. Note: the Kumya's have inconsistent genders. I call them all "he" personally, but some are intended to be female I believe.

According to their somewhat outdated yet updated English blog, "Established in 1988, Baby, the Stars Shine Bright is a lolita fashion clothing brand founded by Akinori and Fumiyo Isobe in Tokyo, Japan" Their first store opened in 1999, with their first international store in Paris opening in 2006. They have since opened two stores in the US, with one since closing, and participated in New York Fashion Week 2024 via Global Fashion Collective (They have a timeline on their website). The popular novel-turned-movie Kamikaze Girls featured a main character going to the store and wearing their clothing.

Also The brand was named after an Everything But the Girl album. I just wanted to mention this.

Metamorphose Temps de Fille

Metamorphose is a Japanese brand that makes pieces in just about every substyle, and some ouji. They currently make all(?) their pieces in plus size one-sizes as well.

Kuniko Kato started Metamorphose as a freelance brand in 1993, it becoming a company in 1997 when Kuniko Kato met the current president of the brand. It was originally named Manifesteange Metamorphose Temps de Fille, with the "Manifesteange" being dropped in 2000. In 2002 they made an English language website to sell to overseas customers.

CROWN LABEL is their "secondary line" that they say is dedicated to sweet and pop items. It was founded in 2009.

ATELIER PIERROT (+Vallée lys)

Atelier Pierrot is a Japanese gothic & ero lolita brand. They are also a stockist², carrying many other lolita brands in store and on their website. They are well-known for their corset skirts and (size) inclusivity.

Atelier Pierrot started as simply "Pierrot" in 1969, making casual clothes. A few other things happened before they moved to Laforet Harajuku¹ in 1978, and by 1993 they stocked more "Mode" and gothic clothing, before Atelier Pierrot came about in 1999. They played a big role in pioneering gothic lolita, and lolita in general, possibly naming it "gothic" in the first place. (Note: an official brief history clashes with some other things that make more sense, so uhhh) (unsure)

They also have a sister brand named Vallée lys, which I am grouping with Atelier Pierrot here, as they often do as well–it's more like a sub-line or sub-label then its own brand, in my opinion. It was made in 2019 and has a more elegant, flow-y vibe. Below, the left bottom photo is a Vallée lys overdress and harness. I'm not sure on the dress it is over.

Alpstola (Atelier BOZ)

Atelier BOZ, technically closed but living through Alpstola, was a gothic lolita & ouji brand that had been around since 1995, originally making gothic clothing before making lolita. Alpstola came about after Atelier BOZ closed from a former designer who was given access to BOZ's old patterns(?). They primarily make reproductions of Atelier BOZ designs at present.

In 1995 Takashi Shibata and Keiji Ichimura decided to start a gothic fashion brand inspired by old Europe. They started a shop in Tokyo in 2001, and Atelier Pierrot actually suggested they make lolita pieces (according to them). Atelier BOZ closed in 2021, citing various circumstances alongside the pandemic. According to one blog post I found, a newer designer was allowed to continue the brand using the manufacturers and patterns of Atelier BOZ, which seems evidently true. (Unsure – lack of sources). Atelier BOZ's brand concept is still listed on Alpstolas website, however.

Emily Temple CUTE

Emily Temple Cute is a Japanese sweet casual brand. A lot of their pieces are made from the same or similar patterns, just different prints.

Shirley Temple was a children's brand started in 1974, an offshoot and adult counterpart created in Emily Temple CUTE. They also had a tween brand named Emily Temple, started in 1983 and discontinued in 2002, alongside a few other ones. In 2012 Emily Temple Cute became its own company, and is completely separate from Shirley Temple. Despite filing for bankruptcy that same year, Shirley Temple still exists, if you're curious.

I am unsure of the capitalization of cute. It seems inconsistent, so I assumed they used to do it but it has since been stopped? Or maybe it's like how ALICE and the PIRATES is always just Alice and the Pirates because no one cares.

Hoshibako Works

Hoshibako Works is a Chinese & Japanese lolita brand with a very distinct sweet-classic-sometimes-country-borderline-hime style, I think it can best be described as "gorgeous." They make a lot of accessories.

Hoshibako Works was created as a Taobao shop in 2017, not doing much until 2020 where the owner went on to graduate school and collaborate with a Japanese business partner called Shigure. Hoshibako Works gained quite a bit more notoriety in the west from collaborations with various media, such as Touhou Project and Cardcaptor Sakura, in my opinion.

Bodyline

Bodyline is the former main cheap and easily accessible brand. They are also a "sexy" costume brand. They have more recently died in popularity, formerly being massively promoted to newer lolitas, but people now find them not worth it, think they are leaning more towards costumes, and/or feel their lolita endeavors dying out. Most people only buy secondhand, in my experience. They primarily have solids and simple sweet prints.

Bodyline was started as a costume brand, later going on to make cheap lolita fashion. Their former owner, Mr. Yan, is renowned for (technically allegedly) being crazy and a creep beyond legality, making a body pillow of himself alongside various activities you don't want me to mention.

MILK

MILK is at present a more casual Japanese women & mens brand, not making dedicated lolita pieces. They still make many kawaii or otherwise alternative pieces (otome and girly being what they are mainly categorized as), but they are clearly trying to have more mainstream appeal. They have never strictly been a lolita brand, but are one of the oldest Harajuku brands and were featured in lolita coordinates thoroughly throughout the 90s-2000s.

Hitomi Okawa founded MILK in 1970. She was inspired by American fashion during the 50s and 60s, later stating that what was then now called lolita fashion was what they had been making for a while. They started as expensive and a bit too extravagant for everyday wear, but eventually became some people's daily wear. In the late 80s some of their feminine pieces started to resemble lolita, and by the early 90s they were featured in many lolita coordinates.

Jane Marple was founded by Yasuhiro Narita and Megumi Murano in 1985, opening a Laforet Harajuku¹ store in 1988. I am unsure of anything past then. It is named after an Agatha Christie character, and the company that owns it is named after a street, St. Mary Mead Co., Ltd.

Filoli: Tea for 2 review/overview

0

你好! Filoli is an estate, primarily mansion & garden, that was built in 1917 that is now open to the (paying) public. "Originally built as a private residence in 1917, Filoli was opened to the public in 1975 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The property is considered one of the finest remaining country estates of the 20th century, featuring a 54,000+ square-foot Georgian revival-style mansion, 16 acres of exquisite English Renaissance gardens, a 6.8-acre Gentleman’s Orchard, and hundreds of acres of Natural Lands with 6 distinct ecosystems and nature trails." - Filoli's about page

Entrance to the estate is required to go to the Quail Cafe, which offers a walk-in afternoon tea for two. For a non-member adult, assuming no discounts apply, entrance is currently $36. (Entrance is free for members, which also gives a discount to the cafe, so keep that in mind if you plan on going multiple times a year).

According to their website, you cannot book reservations for the cafe. However, I have never seen both the outside and inside seating full, and have always gotten lucky with finding a table. They also say on the menu that they can make it gluten free if you give them a 24 hour notice, so I'm a bit confused on the "no reservations" – I'm assuming there is an exception for allergies, or the no reservations is outdated, or the allergen notice is simply untrue at present. It's also possible it's just to call to verify they have the ingredients and are prepared..? I'd call them to ask what's the deal.

PLEASE NOTE: This review is for Filoli Afternoon Tea For Two. Here's a link to their PDF menu (page 4). It is only available after 1 PM for walk-ins. This is not a review for their fancy reservation tea service.

Review

The tea is $69 without tax for two people. Not per person. That is rather cheap for afternoon tea, usually for two people it is double the cost. Again though, you do have to pay for entrance to the estate as well, but I'd assume you'd make use of that fact. That makes it $141 for two people, but really I'd assume you're also going to walk around the estate and such. I went to the estate and happened to get tea, not the other way around, so I don't count the cost.

The tea being designed for two people does mean you would practically need your group to be in multiples of two, or three not very hungry people. Not to mention some savories are given in odd quantities, hence why I state the quantities of every item in this review. It is given to you on large wooden tray that hosts the tea and tier.

It is walk-ins only according to their website and only available after 1 PM, as I mentioned above.

Savories

Egg Salad On Dark Rye (4x) In my notes I quite literally just wrote "egg salad-y" and that the bread was not a bad choice, and it "didn't taste like bad rye." I recall it being a rather unnotable egg salad, as in there was no distinct mustard taste or real texture or anything.

Smoked Salmon Pinwheel (4x) The first one I had tasted like I had just popped an entire smoked salmon in my mouth without anything else, while the second tasted pretty salty so I could indeed taste the capers. The wrap or whatever that thing is called didn't overpower the salmon and make it dry as they usually do.

Cucumber Watercress & Cream Cheese (3x) Cucumber on bread. The cream cheese was so little it may as well have not been there. It tasted fine for cucumbers on bread, and I suppose I'm glad the cream cheese was there even though you couldn't taste it at all. It was like a fine layer of butter on bread, but like when you get breakfast and buttered toast on the side and you have to debate like "is there butter on here??" but it isn't dry so it must?

Herbed Free-Range Curry Chicken Salad With Puff Pastry (3x) Looking at the name I'm not sure what part was puff pastry? It was on bread, maybe it was inside or they were simply out? Either way, I personally didn't like it much, but I ate a whole one so it wasn't bad or anything. It was a kind of random addition to the repertoire? It also wasn't a super strong curry flavor, I recall thinking "there's turmeric in here, yeah." It's most likely supposed to emulate Indian curry, if you're curious. Again, wasn't that bad and wasn't tasteless. I also did not eat the sprouts on top.

My notes say "Indifferent on savory. It succeeds and they didn't taste too bad" as my conclusion.

Sweets

Mini Scones (2x) In this case they were lemon with a little jar of strawberry preserves. They were very lemon. We both agreed they weren't really scones, but you can't quite call them anything other than scones really. They were pretty oily to the touch but didn't taste oily. They were relatively dry as you might expect but not super dry to the point of being hard. The lemon didn't compliment the jam. I didn't finish the scone, but I usually don't.

The rest are, and I quote: A Seasonal Variety of Mini Desserts and Petit-Fours so do keep that in mind.

Large Petit-Four (1x white, 1x magenta-ish) Vanilla cake with frosting in between covered in white chocolate. Exactly what you'd expect from that description. They were good. The magenta-ish one clearly had a layer of jam, but I couldn't taste it at all.

Macarons (1x Lemon 1x Some Berry?) My real-time paraphrasing of my mother after eating the lemon one: "Could use a little more lemon flavor. Filling is thin. Meringue is very well done. Good crunch then it's soft, not too soft." My thought were the same for the berry one, except I couldn't tell what berry it was meant to be. My assumption was raspberry, or it might've been some kind of wildberry though raspberry is more likely.

Green Tea Cake Thing (1x) Tastes how you'd expect. A little dry. Whatever is on the top of it is jelly? I wrote that it was "kinda like mirror glaze on cakes in texture." I didn't finish it.

Espresso Cup-looking Thing (1x) I didn't eat it. All my notes were: "Mousse. Tastes like coffee" and a quote of: "This is the best because it has the most flavor" and I recall her stating that even without the coffee flavor it'd still be the best or something along those lines.

Tea

I forgot to write my thoughts on the tea in the moment. They give you a pot of hot water, so you can likely order a different tea from your companion. We just ordered the jasmine green tea, and it was about as you'd expect if I recall. The sugar (cubes) are on a table by the napkins and such, not on the tray or anything, so you had to walk to get them. I do not remember if they had honey, but I'd be surprised if they did not.

They also have free dispensers of just cold water, one with fruit one without.

Thoughts

I didn't feel like it was too much food at all like many tea services, but it was approaching that so it wasn't too little either.

Near everything generally needed more filling though. I would suggest making no changes to the salmon, and that's about the end of my notes. It's a fairly inoffensive tea, it is afternoon tea and it's in a pretty garden and not bad. There isn't too much to say.

It was absolutely worth the price, assuming you exclude the cost of entry to Filoli. I didn't go for the tea, I went for Filoli, so I did. And frankly they likely assume that as well.

I don't believe in star ratings, but maybe like a 7/10. 6.5? I'm also bad at star ratings. There is a reason why I am not a real food reviewer.

Crafts Before Ursa Major

0

你好!Before Ursa Major, I decided to make a few lolita items. Although a few weren't even for Ursa Major – I've had this purple fabric for a while and only now finally sewed the skirt I had in mind for it, so the convention was mostly a self-imposed deadline.
Nonetheless, after way too much fighting my sewing machine (as it hates me), some hot glue, and way way too much ironing, I present to you: Things I Made™️ (not actually tm)

First! I made a lot, lotta lot of bows. I purchased some pink ribbon that more or less matches the bow on Alice's Doll House (color-wise, and it looks like the same kind from far away) as I lack the headbow.
They're all simply hot glued, and the lace is from a roll that is apparently from the dollar store? Anyhow, I attached them to some alligator clips ♪

The ribbon with lace is meant to be a hair tie I suppose? I just glued them together out of boredom, honestly.
They look far cuter when in use than not, in which they look kind of dumb honestly.

Secondly, this purple beehive skirt. I've had the fabric for so, so long. (It's from Joanns, though I couldn't locate the fabric online to link it)

I followed this tutorial by SewBlack, although I ended up not hemming the skirt. Half out of laziness, half for aesthetics.
Due to the fact I had a different width of fabric than hers, my 媽媽 (mama) had to figure out how to cut the pattern for our fabric and managed to heavily confuse me with her math. Luckily, the fabrics pattern ended up having a fair amount of the beehives fairly centered without any intention.
And we shall not mention how the waistband was cut wrong twice, or how many loose threads I cut.
Though, I still don't know what to do as a matching accessory. I'm also debating making a bow for the skirt, but I don't know. I almost want to make a cute hat with a bow, but that's not exactlyyy my style, so in the end I'm unsure.

Here's how I plan on coording it for the day before Ursa Major ♪ (by the day before I mean the first day, the 8th, but I won't be going to Ursa Major that day – I only have a Sunday badge & plan to shop on Saturday. Sadly I won't be going to the tea I initially planned on on the 8th as I wish to buy more items rather than drink delicious tea... a tragedy, truly.)

I promise it looks far better in reality, and usakumya is not intended to match me.
It would look so cute with longer bloomers that peak out from under the skirt... I'll have to make some/pick some up.

Thirdly! I made bear ears. They actually match a cape my mama made me, as they're made of the scrap fabric (and some felt). I cut a pattern out of some random tracing paper, remade the pattern about six times, then cut it, sewed it by hand, and then attached it to alligator clips. They actually look surprisingly great! ♪ I made them specifically to match kumya's floating tea party, arguably then I should just get kumya's ears, buuut... I just made 'em since it's basically free. They could've been attached to the hairclip better, the ears don't even match shape-wise, but no one will ever notice... hopefully.

Fourth...ly? A mask. As I lack a matching mask aesthetically, the convention requires one, and the last time I tried to get another mask for the aesthetic none of them fit me; I made one tracing my mask. Then taking this pink gingham fabric and some white cotton as a lining, cutting it, and sewing it, well I don't know what else you'd expect but that under the mask section but that in fact produces a mask. Also, for some reason, there was just a random triangle super awkwardly cut out of the fabric?? But! I ended up adding the same lace I used for the bows to the mask, alongside a fabric flower & bow, with pearl decor. Very cute ♪

I simply edited the photo to be transparent then edited it on a photo I took of a random wooden item known commonly as "floorboards." Please pretend it doesn't look atrocious, I simply added a background as the white background version looked like a fake Amazon product cover and the mask actually lying on a table looks abysmal.

And finally, I made some badge ribbons ♪  Using my aunt's Cricut as my mother's broke, and some iron on vinyl.

It's not a particularly original idea – but hey maybe there's like 50 Kumya fan clubs, they're so cute they deserve it.
They're also far more readable outside of bright lighting, but up close in bright lighting I will admit they shine a tad too much to read well. However, I doubt that'll be an issue often.

Andddd, that's all really.
Though, I do have the fabric for an upcoming project – a few actually; some felt for a broach, and some pink plain cotton to make a JSK.
But, for the time being; that is all.

The Start

0

Greetings & Hello. My name is Tianmei, but you can call me Tiantian. I use any pronouns, and you can use feminine or masculine terms to refer to me. This is the start of my blog on lolita fashion.

Elegantly Sweet will mostly be informational, like an off-brand lolita guidebook but worse, with random dives into random rabbit holes regarding lolita.
At this point, I can't even remember when I found lolita. I must have started wearing it in 2022?

Nonetheless, I love the fashion, and I love introducing people to things I love. Part of why I made this blog. But – such begs the question; am I the most suited for an informational blog? Someone who likely qualifies still as a babylita (beginner lolita)? Someone who can't even name 10 prints from my favorite brand off the top of my head? Some random person on the internet?

Such is why this blog exists. It is all of an adventure, an inspiration, and help for those who found the fashion yesterday.

Pretty and ugly don't exist, only the fun that comes with it. I hope you enjoy reading what I write.

Edit: ended up not being an informational blog 👍
